Mischief Night

It was the year 2005 and the date October 30. That was the most terrible and frightening night of our lives. My cousin Jackie, my three friends Elena, Ryan, and Kyle, and me blame it all on mischief night. For starters, my name is Jewel Jackobs I am 13 years old. My cousin Jackie Shochet is 14, Elena Gomez is 13, Ryan Ludy is 12, and Kyle Ludy is 10. We were all excited about mischief night like every other kid in the world. Except I just had a really bad feeling this year, I thought to myself its nothing its just butterflies like when you get scared and excited at the same time. So we all proceeded with our plans as usual every year. Since today there was no school because of hurricane Wilma we all met up in the afternoon planning more and making sure we understood what were all doing. The plans were to have toilet paper, eggs, and water balloons and to throw them at cars, and houses.

We were also planning to egg a Mc Donald's for giving us the wrong food one time. The time for this craziness to happen was just about 10:30 P.M. We all suddenly had gotten bored and decided to go inside and watch TV for a while. All I heard in my head was the clock ticking "tick-tock, tick-tock." Now I was even more nervous than before and I'm usually never this nervous about mischief night. I just had a really bad feeling about tonight. I thought about telling my cousin but I thought she'd think I was a big chicken, so I kept my bad feeling quiet. We were watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Jackie's favorite show and mine. There was a marathon of episodes on and Jackie and I couldn't resist. Jackie and I hadn't realized it but time flew by very quickly. I was glad that I had totally forgotten about tonight but in the corner of my mind it was still there eating me apart. While I concentrated on the show with Jackie the day darkened to night. I then knew that my bad feeling had become even stronger then before, and I was starting to get aghast of it. I felt as if someone was urging me to either tell someone or not go, I had to take a stand, I had to do something. The time was now 6:30 dinnertime, my mom had ordered take-out for us it was Chinese food also, our favorite. When we had all eaten my mind had calmed down a tad bit, but I could still feel the bad feelings inside me. After dinner, Ryan, Kyle and Elena, came to the door and asked us if we were ready and we replied with "Almost, wait outside for a couple of minutes." Then my anxiety grew as if it was growing off of my fear.

When we were all ready to go, I told my mom we were going to play manhunt because we were all dressed in black and, that we'd be home at 11:00 P.M. As soon as my face hit the wet and damp air a chill ran down my spine, now I had become very peril. We went to Ryan and Kyle's house and got our addresses and split up, the part I hate with all my living guts, lucky for me I had Elena. This year we made different plans, Elena and me, and Jackie, Ryan, and Kyle. Our goals were to egg 5 houses, toilet paper 5 houses, and throw water balloons at 7 cars, so Elena and I set off for the houses first. Our addresses were 490, 340, 245, 128, and 538. I realized that the address 538 was the farthest and the person we disliked the most, so we decided to do that house last. Elena and I approached the first house and the deed was done. It happened so fast; we were running as if we were running for our lives. Then the night went by so fast and before I knew it we where on our way to the last house, this is when my nerves began to kick in again. We could see the house in our view; now my heart was beating at an abnormal pace, my nerves felt like they were tearing at me, it felt like it was ripping me apart. Elena handed me an egg and some toilet paper we counted 1, 2, 3 and threw. Seconds later, we did realize there was someone sitting on the porch in a chair the whole time! Elena and I ran as fast as we've ever ran in our lives, but the man got in his car and tried to follow us. I told Elena to hide in the bushes around the corner as we watched the man's car go by about five times. By now my heart was pounding 10 times its usual rate, hoping to not make a wrong move of letting the man hear and finding us. Then the man parked his car and got out to look for us, so we both crept so quiet that we knew one wrong move could cost us dearly. We managed to get away, we ran to the place where we were all suppose to meet when we were done. To our surprise no one was there, Elena checked her watch it was 10:30 and we thought they probably went back home. So then, Elena and I decided to stop by my house first. We went in my back yard to look into my window to see if Jackie was there and she wasn't, that was surprising to us. Then we went to Ryan and Kyle's house and they still weren't there, Elena and I were so puzzled we couldn't think straight. We just decided to walk around the neighborhood to see if we would see them, but we still had to be cautious because who knows if that man was still out there.

So Elena and I walked, and walked, until we were at the address 538. Boy did we dread this place, but something was telling me to go there. Something was dragging me to this very spot, another feeling that they were inside. I told Elena everything about the very beginning, and the feeling I had now at this very moment, I hope I didn't scare Elena too much with all this information at once. She and I knew what we had to do to find Jackie, Ryan, and Kyle and that we had to go into the house. We made a plan. Elena would ring the house's bell and run, and while he was chasing Elena I would go into the house to look for them. I watched Elena ring the bell and hide, and then expose herself on purpose, and as we predicted the man got in his car and followed her. So far our plan had been going well. I ran into his house as he drove away. As soon as I walked in, I had that feeling again and it wasn't a good one. It was quite dim in there but I continued to search for my friends and my cousin despite the eeriness in the house. Every time I would take a step the floorboards would creak like in the movies, and in haunted houses.

I was still scared but not too much. I continued walking until I got to a basement door. I did not want to go in there, but I was doing this all for a good reason. I turned the doorknob and walked down the withered old stairs, I searched for a light heedfully. In the back of my mind I didn't want to know what was in there, because everywhere I walked I felt as if I was on something squishing it. Finally I accomplished my goal of reaching the light. I pulled the string and I uncovered Jackie, Ryan, and Kyle tied up, with duct tape on their mouths. I quickly untied them and painfully took the duct tape off. I then told them the whole story of me having the bad feeling, seeing the man watch us egg his house, and the plan Elena and I had concocted earlier. Then we scurried to get out of this wretched house and find Elena! When we got out of the house we searched high and low for Elena. We reached 420 and there stood the man with Elena. She looked so terror-stricken that she was pale, paler then the black clothes she had on. They both just stood there. We were all wondering why Elena wasn't running towards us, or even breathing for that matter, I guess she was just in too much shock. A minute later we realized the man was holding a gun, and now he was pointing it at Elena's head. We were all scared out of our minds except me. It's not that I wasn't scared for Elena, believe me I was frightened for Elena but, I had another feeling that made me not scared. Since I was the only brave one, I had to rescue Elena. I said 'Excuse me sir, can you please lower the gun and put my friend down?" He replied with "NO, YOU STUPID KIDS HAVE BEEN EGGING MY HOUSE FOR YEARS ALREADY AND TONIGHT IM PUTTING A STOP TO ALL THIS NONSENSE!" I said "WELL EXCUSE YOU MISTER! IF YOU COULD CHANGE YOUR ATTITUDE AND START BEING NICER AROUND HERE MAYBE NO ONE WOULD EGG YOUR HOUSE! AND MAYBE IF YOU WEREN'T SO VIOLENT AND THREATEN KIDS WITH FREAKING GUNS MAYBE PEOPLE WOULDN'T HATE YOU LIKE US KIDS MY GOD!" After that he didn't speak for a while, then he said "Wow I've never thought of it that way before, here take your friend and never bother me again or next time this gun will be your new best friend." I could not just let that slip I said, " You still haven't learned yet have you?" the man turned around and it all happened so fast all I can remember is excruciating pain, I had been shot right in my stomach. The last thing I remember that night was red and blue lights, and the horrifying echo of the man's evil laugh. I had surgery on my stomach and the bullet was removed, I was stitched up and everything was fine. After my wound had healed we all got grounded for actually being out late and for succeeding with mischief night. When we went to court Jackie, Elena, Ryan, Kyle and I were forced, as witnesses there was no one else. It turns out the man's name was Randolph Larry Smitt, and he had changed his name a couple of times because of his bad doings. We won the case and Randolph had been sentenced for life in jail for threating us, shooting me, and his past records. To this day I can still remember the evil grin he had on his face as he shot me, I will never forget Mister Randolph Larry Smitt or October 30, 2005. But I will tell you this there was never again another mischief night.
