Random and wholly inaccurate, yes, but I liked it nonetheless.
I haven't played the game too much so far (still only at the Manolia Cathedral), but I did give the arena a spin, and it's pretty interesting. I chose a light smidge to start me off, trained it a bit and fought with it. I win whenever I fight a smidge, but against ouroboroses I'm screwed. There's one thing bothering me though, and that's that apparently, according to the arena FAQ on GameFAQs, there are three items that can be only obtained in tier 1, so if I get to whatever the trigger is that unlocks tier 4, I won't ever see those items unless I start over. Now it's not just because I want those items, it's that I'm looking for a full item encyclopedia.
Edit: Nevermind, I misunderstood what the FAQ meant. Good thing you're not required to start over...

Those mirror items are exceedingly hard to come by. Don't spend too much time trying to get them.. keep the sittings with the arena brief.
You can however abuse it to have grossly overpowered equipment for the period you're in. I was able to have the Swallow before Magus, plus some elemental Plates, to name a few. The final tier can potentially get you multiple Angel's Tiaras, as normally you can only get one per game. It's status immunity and auto haste for the females. Ownage.
