Of course I was talking about Pokemon. I figured with the context of what you'd said before that, it was obvious. But anyways.
You had talked about Shuckle being so abysmal earlier, and I gotta say it's kinda depressing this gen in regard to how useless it is in competitive play, even with three tools that make it a god of destruction against the CPU: Gluttony, Trick Room, and Power Trick.
Getting 921 attack is amusingly easy, Gyro Ball is guaranteed to be 150 power against every single fully evolved pokemon in the game not running Trick Room speed, making it a better option than Stone Edge without a weakness to exploit. With a Tyranitar around it's still nigh impossible to floor it with special attacks.
Which is the exact opposite of how a human would react to that thing. Plus priority moves are as rampant as they can get. In doubles TR, this can be slightly combatted by running Protect on Shuckle, but it's temporary relief at best.
I'll give Game Freak points for trying, though, as its movepool had just enough to actually do something with Power Trick, and it wouldn't surprise me if Gluttony was given to it with the intention of getting more out of the move.
But since raping the CPU is only so fun and gets old fast, it still warrants little more than catching it just to have the dex entry.
That's absolutely true. They wanted Shuckle to become usable that way and failed miserably... but ironically, nowadays it's okay because of the support set with Rest, Toxic, and two out of Encore, Knock Off and Stealth Rock.
As a side note, I question the wisdom of giving Smeargle Technician. Makes it go from "second worst offense in the game" to... "second worst offense in the game". Because a boosted Water Pulse would be TOTALLY worth using over Confuse Ray, mirite?
To be fair, giving Scizor Technician looked like a worthless gesture until Platinum. Even if it could use buffed Aerial Ace and such with massive strength behind it, it was still a bit of wasted potential. One used it because it did "more" than Swarm.
Then Bullet Punch came along, as did Superpower, and suddenly it was WHAT THE FUCK HAVE YOU DONE TO OUR METAGAME GAMEFREAK
I wouldn't say GameFreak failed miserably with Shuckle so much that they went and made changes everywhere else, the culmination of which making Gluttony Trick too risky and ineffective. On paper it looks awesome, and testing it against the average dumbass/CPU, it is. I equate it to one of those enemies in RPGs that can rip your party apart, unless you use a particular spell against it that renders it incapable of doing anything.
The difference between Scizor and Smeargle, though, is that Scizor's movepool can be expanded whenever, as we found out with Platinum, whereas Smeargle is to the mercy of whatever new moves a generation introduces. And of course, Scizor has an attack stat higher than 20. Until they come up with a move that has 50-60 power and puts the enemy to sleep every time, Technician won't be doing anything at all.
Now, I'd like to see something with Technician, Charge Beam, and decent SA sometime in the future. That'd be neat.
Sounds pretty sick, even going so far as to justify the small and immediate loss incurred by dumping Thunderbolt.
Technician STAB Rock Blast is also pretty cool, packing 56 base power a pop. Granted it does take three shots to beat out Stone Edge.
Also that IGN article on new Starcraft 2 units that mainly hyped Protoss stuff is making me very hungry for Zerg news. They're my favorite race and I'm hoping they've created some awesome stuff for them.
Given the Mothership, do you have the feeling they're going to give the other two their own lone superpowered/defensive unit with a myriad of abilities?
I note with mild interest that apart from one or two odds and ends on the DS/WiiWare front, you're the only person on this site with similar gaming interests to my own.
I was also very surprised to see other trainers in Mt. Mortar. It was incredibly barren in G/S apart from the fighting guy and items, and I hope this remake makes it even livelier.
Only today (lol) which is why I edited my last post, since I ended up commenting on stuff that's been removed as of now.
My cousin had already briefed me on the three separate campaigns thing, which at the risk of sounding like every other whiner is a bit of a turn-off. My beef/concern isn't with the online which I know will allow all races to be used, but rather there being units and such withheld from the first two so as to make the later campaigns more like expansions.
It's been so long since I've been a Starcraft nut so I'm questioning whether or not I want to buy three things (even if the following two retail for less) for the whole experience, and I know I'm not going to be satisfied with only a portion of it.
It's not that your commenting on stuff that's been removed, its that the three races are nearly finished for beta testing. and you can already see what all the units do. Zerg is pretty good at the moment, seeing as it gained mind control (sort of) and the Roach's ability to move while burrowed.
As for the three games... it's more like a trilogy. I don't think units are being 'withheld', more that they haven't been concieved yet. And seeing all the cool campaign units makes me happy they won't be added to the multiplayer side (Brutalisk anyone?)
Hijacking this back to Pokémon, don't jump for joy yet regarding the legendary birds. The flyer just looks horrible, especially compared to the Rotom one last year. Likely fake, but there's the chance that it's not.
I've always enjoyed the Mahogany area of G/S/C, for some reason. Shiny Gyarados was awesome back in the day, before I knew about shinies. Pryce was a fun fight as well, and Piloswine was my favorite 2nd generation Pokémon when the games first came out. I think I'm one of the few people who enjoy ice sliding puzzles, so Ice Path was interesting for me. All in all, it's probably my favorite section of Johto, so I'm looking forward to it.
Unfortunately, this is followed by the nightmare that is Clair, so yeah. I had so much trouble with her nine years ago.
EDIT: *Clair. I could have sworn her name was spelled 'Claire'.
