I'm not a big fan of Ice Cap, either, but having said that I think my taste in Sonic music is about as stereotypical as it gets.
My favorite piece is Flying Battery, which is far as I know is liked by everyone that's heard it, unless it isn't, in which case it means they haven't heard it. Followed closely by Mystic Cave, again apparently universally liked for its catchiness.
Other than that, uh.. Emerald Hill, Chemical Plant, Aquatic Ruins, Oil Ocean, Marble Garden, the pyramid portion of Sandpolis, and Death Egg. Oh, and the penultimate and final boss themes for Sonic 3.
I know I've praised the Saturn version of 3D Blast's soundtrack in front of you before, and it's still my favorite assortment of Sonic music.
Sonic CD's NA soundtrack has been shat on a lot from what I can tell, but I honestly don't think it's that bad. I like a lot of the "past" tracks, Stardust's bad future is very catchy, and Tidal Tempest's bad future just sounds awesome. Over a year ago I found and downloaded a song called Techno Power Mix, a medley consisting mainly of remixed versions of "past" stages. I really like it.
I like Final Battery and the final boss theme from S3&K (not Doomsday, the one before that) a lot too. The corresponding Project Chaos remixes were brilliant too, some of the best remixes I've ever heard TBH. Too bad the soundtracks in general started taking a dive with SA2. Except for the final boss themes, which always seem to deliver.
One track I can't seem to understand, though, is Mystic Mansion from Heroes. If you look at the OST, it's made up of multiple small tracks instead of one big one, and the game seems to decide which one to play at random, except unlike the OoT Hyrule Field theme, it doesn't feel like it either.
The only game music with lyrics that I've ever taken a liking to is in The World Ends With You. That game has an absolutely incredible soundtrack. 'Calling' is currently my favorite.
That's one of my major complaints with the Sonic series beyond Sonic Adventure 1, the music. I feel that a lot of songs would have worked much better without lyrics, especially when concerned with Knuckle's levels in SA2.
I hated knuckles in sonic adventure two battle, I mean, who takes a character EVERYONE wants to fight with, and puts them in a treasure hunt? It's more than just stupid, it's sadistic.
I liked Rouge's levels even less. In fact, I stopped playing the game after that timed emerald level with the frantic music playing and Robotnik screaming at you to hurry up seemingly every ten seconds.
Mad space made me hate gravity for life, I mean, knuckles last level was at least 3 times the size, but it took you fifteen minutes just to get to the right planet in rouge's level.
It's worth pointing out that when I say I stopped "after" Rogue's level, I meant I stopped after getting way too frustrated with it.
What pissed me off even more is that I had asked for this as a birthday present from a friend, so to make me hate it so much to want to stop playing felt even worse. =/
My brother got stuck on Security Hall something awful on his first time through. It's not an easy place by any means... Mad Space was just annoying though. What makes it even worse is that it seemed to be the inspiration for Super Mario Galaxy, where the gimmick was pulled off perfectly.
