Analysis: Forretress

[DEFENSIVE COMBINATIONS]

Forretress’ Bug/Steel typing is, simply put, excellent. It’s typing resists Ice, Dragon, Ghost, Dark, Normal, Steel, Bug, Psychic and Grass and gives it an immunity to Poison while only having only one weakness, fire. A Thick Fat Grumpig makes a decent complement to Forretress as its resists fire attacks and can take on Mixape and Scarftran decently while Forretress resists all of Grumpigs weaknesses and can take on Weaviles/most types of Tyranitars.

Swampert makes a good complement with resisting fire while taking on Physical Infernape/Scarftran. Plus it can take advantage of the field hazards that Forretress lays with Roar.

Salamence (Particularly WishSalamence) also works due to resisting Fire and Forretress resists Dragon and Ice while being neutral to Rock. Salamence also can take on Mixed Attacking Infernape for Forretress while Forretress can take on Weavile for Salamence.[/DEFENSIVE COMBINATIONS]

[SET DESCRIPTION]

Rapid Spin is a very useful move and lucky Forretress is one of the best Spinners. It clears field hazards that can potently be deadly to your team.

Zap Cannon, while having shaky accuracy, is an useful option mainly because it allows it to take on Gyarados easily. Even with max attack and a Dragon Dance it cannot 2HKO with Waterfall unless it has a Life Orb and even then it still only 2HKOs you 41.55% of the time if you have Leftovers. Bulky Gyarados needs 3 Dragon Dances to 2HKO you. While, with the given EVs, 2HKOs Bulky Gyarados 87% of the time including with Leftovers and always 2HKOs a more offensive Gyarados. Plus Zap Cannon has the 100% Paralysis rate so you can possibly cripple it or anincoming sweeper.

Explosion has its uses as it OHKOs a good chunk of the OU metagame that doesn’t resist/ is immune to it.

Choosing either Spikes or Toxic Spikes can be a hard one. Spikes always does a minimum of 12%, but can be evaded by Flying Types or Pokémon with the ability Levitate. Meanwhile Toxic Spikes still doesn’t hit Flying Types/Levitatersand if a non part flying/levitating Poision type switches in it get removed, but it easily cripples most walls and sweepers.

Earthquake should be your main attack due it hits Heatran/Infernape/Magnezone/Lucario particularly hard and always 2HKOs them while doing decent damage to Tyranitar. Plus it allows you to do something to Jirachi.

[OTHER OPTIONS]
Gyro Ball can be used as it hits Gengar/Mismaguis/Garchomp/Deoxys E harder than any other attacks, but all of them are crippled by Zap Cannon except Garchomp.

Stealth Rock is useful as it hits quite a few type for a good amount of damage and no matter what it does a bit, but many other pokes can use it and Forretress is one the few pokes that get Spikes/Toxic Spikes. Still worth mentioning though.

Light Screen and Reflect are usable ifyou feel you need Forretress to be a more support pokemon or your team needs the support.

[OFFENSIVE COMBINATIONS]

If you have Earthquake/Zap Cannon then Gliscor presents a problem. A Mixed Swampert or a stardard Starmie can come in, take its attacks and scare them off with a STABed Surf/Hydro Pump. Meanwhile ifyou have Earthquake/Explosion, Gengar/Mismaguis wall you. Heracross and Weavile can help that with Choice Banded Pursuits.
