[GLOBAL INFO]

Analysis: Tyranitar

[DEFENSIVE COMBINATIONS]
Tyranitar is a Dark/Rock type which has a 2x weakness to Ground, Water, Grass, Bug, and Steel, a 4x weakness to Fighting, a resistance to Normal, Fire, Poison, Flying, Ghost, and Dark, and an immunity to Psychic. Having a total of 6 weaknesses may seem like it would be a big downfall, but also having 6 resistances, 1 immunity and a 50% Special Defense increase in Sandstorm makes up for all of those weaknesses. Many Flying pokemon such as Gliscor, Salamence, and Gyarados compliment Tyranitar well. Gliscor is able to take advantage of Sandstorm because of its ability Sand Veil and take Fighting, Bug, and Ground attacks that are aimed for Tyranitar while it can take Ice Beams meant for Gliscor. Water attacks are still a problem however and need to be dealt with some other way. Both Gyarados and Salamence have Intimidate which makes it easier for them to switch into physical attacks. Gyarados happens to resist everything that is super effective on Tyranitar and Salamence resists everything but Steel attacks. Tyranitar is able to take both Ice Beam (which is 4x effective on Salamence) and Thunderbolt (which is 4x effective on Gyarados) well.

A defensive Fighting type Pokemon such as Hitmontop, Machamp, or Hariyama also goes very well with any of the above Pokemon since they resist Rock attacks that will hurt if it is coming from a Choice Banded Rhyperior or Tyranitar. They counter Tyranitar and Weavile which are probably the biggest threats to the combination above. Tyranitar is able to cover both of the fighting type’s weaknesses also.

One of the problems Tyranitar has is not being able to switch in without getting hit by one of its weaknesses. You can however try to lure something out creating an easy switch in for Tyranitar. Blissey and Cresselia are the easiest switch ins for Tyranitar since they can’t do much to it. A special sweeper such as Starmie would almost guarantee a switch to these 2 if the opponent has them. You should however beware of status depending on the set you use.

Ghosts such as Gengar and Dusknoir are able to switch into Tyranitar’s biggest weakness which should be one of the most common attacks against it.

[SET]
Name: CBtar
Item: Choice Band
IVs: Max
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
Nature: Adamant
Stats: 404 HP / 403 Atk / 257 Def / 203 SpAtk / 236 SpDef / 158 Speed
Moves:
- Stone Edge
- Crunch
- Earthquake
- Pursuit
[/SET]

[SET DESCRIPTION]

Choice Band boosts Tyranitar’s already impressive attack even more. Stone Edge and Crunch are your main attacking since they benefit from STAB and hit almost everything for a lot of damage. Earthquake is needed mostly for Steel types such as Magnezone who resist Stone Edge and Crunch. It also helps against Heatran, Jirachi, and other Tyranitars which take a lot more damage from Earthquake. Pursuit makes it so that any opponent that switches will take a double powered Pursuit instead of switching away safely. It is very useful for anything that is OHKOd even by a normal powered Pursuit effectively “trapping” it. Max Attack on this set makes it even more deadly and harder to beat. The max HP allows Tyranitar to have an easier chance to switch in and also to be able to take more hits.

[/SET DESCRIPTION]

[OTHER OPTIONS]

There are also 3 alternative EV spreads available for CBtar. One way is to have a Careful nature and use a spread of 252 HP / 216 Atk / 40 SpDef. This allows Tyranitar to take special attacks very well and is even able to take Life Orb Focus Blasts from Timid Gengar. You can also have an Adamant nature with 168 HP / 252 Atk / 88 Speed. This set has enough speed to outrun the standard Skarmory and 2HKO with Stone Edge before it is able to Roost. If you really want a fast Tyranitar then either Adamant or Jolly with 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Speed can be used. This does have the disadvantage of being a lot less durable, but it guarantees that you can outspeed a lot of walls such as Cresselia and also other Tyranitars.

Ice Beam is also an option of this set. A surprise Ice Beam will be able to do a lot of damage to incoming Gliscors and other Ground types. Focus Punch as also an option since a well predicted Focus Punch can hit something as hard as a Stone Edge.
[/OTHER OPTIONS]

[OFFENSIVE COMBINATIONS]

CBTar+Garchomp is one of the most common offensive combination used. Tyranitar’s Sandstream sets up Garchomp’s ability Sandveil giving it an increased 20% evasion. CBtar can also beat Cresselia which helps Garchomp sweep easier. Gyarados also goes well with CBtar since Gyarados is able to beat all of Cbtar’s bulky Ground and Fighting counters. As stated above, anything that is walled by Cresselia, such as Salamence, would be good paired with CBtar since Pursuit or Crunch will be able to beat it easily opening up a sweep for your other pokemon.
[/OFFENSIVE COMBINATIONS]

[STRATEGIC COMBINATIONS]

Entry hazards such as Spikes, Stealth Rocks, and Toxic Spikes makes CBtar sweep much easier. A few layers Spikes or Toxic Spikes turns 3HKOs on walls such as Swampert into 2HKOs. Wish support is also good for the more defensive CBtars since it has no form of recovery and may have to take a lot of the team’s special attacks.
[/STRATEGIC COMBINATIONS]

[SET COUNTERS]

Bulky Ground and Fighting types are the best counters for CBtar. Hippowdon, Swampert and Donphan can all switch into an attack then proceed to hit it with STAB Earthquakes. Fighting types such as Hariyama, Machamo, and Hitmontop do the same with the added benefit of being able to resist both of the STAB attacks.

[SET]
Name: Boah
Item: Leftovers
IVs: Max
EVs: 252 HP/ 188 SpAtk / 68 Speed
Nature: Quiet
Stats: 252 HP / 304 Atk / 256 Def / 300 SpAtk / 236 SpDef / 157 Speed
Moves:
- Substitute
- Focus Punch
- Crunch/Dark Pulse
- Ice Beam/Thunderbolt
[/SET]

[SET DESCRIPTION]

Boah is a set most commonly used to break walls. Since Tyranitar already forces so many switches Substitute helps to scout against switchins, protect it from status, and also get a free attack. Focus Punch is a common combo with Substitute since anything behind a Substitute will not flinch when hit by an attack making it guaranteed that Focus Punch will work. Dark Pulse is mainly used to hit defensive Ground types, but Crunch is a better option on anything else. For this reason you should only pick Dark Pulse if you choose Thunderbolt since Ice Beam will hit Ground types hard enough. Ice Beam and Thunderbolt both have their advantages and disadvantages. Ice Beam hits ground types such as Gliscor and Hippowdon much better while Thunderbolt hits Water types such as Gyarados and Vaporeon. Max HP gives it 404 HP which means each Substitute will have 101 HP so Blissey cannot break it with 1 Seismic Toss. The speed EVs let Boah outspeed Weezing so that it will be able to set up Substitute before Weezing can hit with Will-o-wisp.
[/SET DESCRIPTION]

[OTHER OPTIONS]

Flamethrower or Fire Blast is also an option on this set. It will allow you to do more damage against Bronzong, Forretress, and other Steel types. You can also lower down to 32 Speed EVs if you feel Weezing isn’t much of a threat. A Brave nature is also an option to increase the power of its physical moves instead.
[/OTHER OPTIONS]

[OFFENSIVE COMBINATIONS]

Well here the same things that go well with CBtar will go well with Boah so you can refer to the above for Offensive Combanations.
[/OFFENSIVE COMBINATIONS]

[STRATEGIC COMBINATIONS]

Because of Substitute you may find that Boah gets worn out faster if it has to switch constantly. A Rapid Spinner would be good, or even just a poison type to get rid of Toxic Spikes since it hurts Boah’s survivability a lot. A Wish passer is another good choice to help restore health lost from making Substitutes.
[/STRATEGIC COMBINATIONS]

[SET COUNTERS]
Unless you decide to go with Flamethrower or Fire Blast both Bronzong and Forretress can switch in and hit Boah with Earthquakes or Gyro Balls. Bulky Fighters can also switch in and OHKO, but ones with lower special defense and speed may be 2HKOd.

[GENERAL COUNTERS]

<Here, you will summarize your set counters, and provide any examples of Pokémon that could feasibly deal with a majority of the analysis Pokémon's sets. While the set counters don't necessarily mandate details, try and be specific here. Try and provide a few EV spreads, just because this is the section that will deal with the Pokémon as a whole.>

[/GENERAL COUNTERS]

[PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER]
<Here, as explained, apply the information that you are trying to get across to the reader. I accomplished this by providing "trios" for each set I proposed, and explanations regarding the trios themselves and what to consider when building on these trios. Also, for the sake of maintaining interest, try and contribute original Pokémon to each trio, as reading Pokémon A + B + C, A + D + E, and A + F + G is much more interesting than Pokémon A + B + C, A + B + D, and A + B + E. Pokémon, especially in the DP metagame, is very expansive, and a competitive analysis can easily represent that.

I updated what Ryo sent to Iggy.

I look forward to Ryo finishing this.

I'd assume a Dragon Dance set, a Choice Scarf set, a Mixtar set, and a CurseTar set, all with various other options, are in the plans, correct?

I also have a few cool Tyranitar sets that I would like to run by you, Ryo.
