What is this project?

The purpose of this project is to create a very comprehensive glossary or "dictionary" of competitive Pokemon terminology.  Why?  In a Pokemon analysis, many times a word will be used that will not be familiar to the player who is starting out in competitive battling.  In order to cater to these more inexperienced players, a glossary of terms will be created by the Libelldra Forge community to be added to the site, and linked to in analyses.  It will explain terms that are not used in-game but seen as Pokemon jargon, as well as common abbreviations.  It will be as comprehensive as possible, so that after viewing an entry for a word, the player will have more of an understanding of competitive play.

How can you be involved with this project?

Since this project will be community-based, the draft of the glossary can be reviewed and/or changed by anyone.  If you would like to add a term, please do so in this format:

Term - Comprehensive definition.  If possible, include examples.

Also, if you would like to edit an existing term, please do so in the same format mentioned.  Post all revisions in his topic.  The next post made in this topic will be the current draft of the glossary.

Leftovers numbers
- An [term=Hit_Points]HP[/term] value that is divisible by 16.  Said value maximizes the HP recovery from [item=Leftovers]Leftovers[/item], which heals 1/16 of a Pokemon's HP per turn.  Because the game rounds down the amount of damage healed by Leftovers, a Pokemon with a Leftovers number in HP will restore 1 HP more per turn than it would with an HP value one point lower.

LO - This refers to the item [item=Life_Orb]Life Orb[/item].

Mixed - A term used to describe a Pokemon that can either attack with or take hits from [term=Physical]Physical[/term] and [term=Special]Special[/term] attacks.  Usually appended in front of the role of the Pokemon, such as [term=Sweeper]Sweeper[/term] or [term=Wall]Wall[/term], making it Mixed Sweeper or Mixed Wall.

ParaFlinch - A tactic that involves [term=Paralysis]paralyzing[/term] the enemy, and then using [term=Flinch]flinching[/term] moves to prevent the opponent from moving.  With the ability [ability=Serene_Grace]Serene Grace[/ability] and a move that has a 30% flinch rate, this gives the opponent a 30% chance of moving, not factoring in accuracy. Common ParaFlinchers include [pokemon=Togekiss]Togekiss[/pokemon] and [pokemon=Jirachi]Jirachi[/pokemon].

I think it would be more beneficial to not delve into the specifics of the effectiveness of the strategy.  Should this be reworded as "With the ability Serene Grace which doubles the chance of a move Flinching, the opponent will have a low chance of acting in a turn as a result of Paralysis+Flinching."?

Paralysis - This is the Pokemon status that lowers the afflicted Pokemon's Speed to 25% of its original value.  There is also a 25% chance that the Pokemon will be unable to move that turn.  Paralysis is caused by these [movelist=paralysis]Paralysis moves[/movelist].

PHazing - Abbreviation of "Pseudo-Hazing" which means erasing stat-ups gained through moves usingmoves like [move=Roar]Roar[/move] to force a switch, or [move=Perish_Song]Perish Song[/move] to encourage a switch.

Physical - This refers to the side of damage spectrum that uses the [term=Attack]Attack[/term] and [term=Defense]Defense[/term] stats to decide damage.

Poison - This is the Pokemon status that causes the afflicted Pokemon to lose 1/8 of its [term=HP]HP[/term] rounded down each turn.  Poison and Steel type Pokemon cannot be poisoned.  Poison is caused by these [movelist=poison]Poison moves[/movelist].

Common Psuedo-BoltBeamers include [pokemon=Jolteon]Jolteon[/pokemon].

RBY - The Pokemon generation encompassing the first three games to the series, Red, Blue and Yellow.

Scarf***** - Pokemon which uses [item=Choice_Scarf]Choice Scarf[/item] as an item. The second half of the Pokemon's name is used where the asterisks are, for example, ScarfZone ([pokemon=Magnezone]Magnezone[/pokemon]), and ScarfCross ([pokemon=Heracross]Heracross[/pokemon].)

SD - This refers to either [move=Swords_Dance]Swords Dance[/move] or [move=Selfdestruct]Selfdestruct[/move].

SE - This can refer to either [move=Stone_Edge]Stone Edge[/move] or [term=Super_Effective]Super Effective[/term].

Sleep - This is the Pokemon status that causes a Pokemon to be unable to move until it wakes up.  Duration in [term=DP]DP[/term] is 1-4 turns.

Note: someone is going to have to confirm the durations for the previous generations, along with the probability of waking up each turn.

SpDef - This refers to [term=Special_Defense]Special Defense[/term]

Special - This refers to the side of the damage spectrum that uses the [term=Special_Attack]Special Attack[/term] and [term=Special_Defense]Special Defense[/term] stats to decide damage.

Special Attack - The special damage-dealing potential of a Pokemon. The higher the Special Attack, the higher the Pokemon's ability to deal special damage.

Special Defense - The special damage-taking potential ofa Pokemon. The higher the Special Defense, the higher the Pokemon's ability to take special attacks.

Specs***** - Pokemon which uses [item=Choice_Specs]Choice Specs[/item] as an item. The second half of the Pokemon's name is used where the asterisks are, for example, SpecsZone ([pokemon=Magnezone]Magnezone[/pokemon]), and SpecsMence ([pokemon=Salamence]Salamence[/pokemon].)

Speed - The second absolute stat in Pokemon, it determines whether or not a Pokemon will move first in battle.  Regardless of the difference in Speeds, if Pokemon A has a higher Speed stat than Pokemon B, Pokemon A will go first.

Hazing/Phazing/Stalling I'll probably write up a big definition later on. Watch this space!

SubSeed- A pokemon which utilises Substitute and Leech Seed in tandem for free healing and stalling. This can often be considered a form of PHazing (SubSeed Sceptile/Breloom)

ToxiStaller-A pokemon which either utilises its bulky defences/Toxic Spikes or the move Toxic for the desired stalling effect; this can also mean a pokemon which uses Toxic and Protect in tandem (though there are many variations) as yet another form of PHazing NOTE: Define 'Stalling' (Stall Walrein)

@ MoI: that list should probably also include "CS" to refer to both Choice Scarf and Choice Specs (wherever it's used, the context will probably point out which of the two is meant), seeing as how you've also included "CB" in the list (but not "Band", so you might want to add that too, for stuff like BandCross (is that term still widely used?)).

@ menofuntall: EdgeQuake is resisted by Bronzong, Flygon and Torterra as well.

As soon as I get the time (somewhere today), I'll see if I can compile a list of all moves that are commonly abbrevated.

Fantasty, the term Band is not as widely used today as it was, and CB is the more common term (although yeah it does get use) CS I feel redundant seeing how it applies to two terms and would get confusing to new players

@ menofuntall

Shedinja also is immune to both moves of boltbeam

Before we continue with the topic, I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone who submits a new term with its appropriate explanation would format anything in the explanation that could deserve some explanation on its own, or if it's a move/ability/pokemon, like this:

(This is an example, originally posted by menofuntall)

[QUOTE]
Edgequake - The use of the moves [move=Stone_Edge]Stone Edge[/move] and [move=Earthquake]Earthquake[/move]. Like [term=BoltBeam]Boltbeam[/term], they provide at least neutral coverage to all Pokemon but [pokemon=Breloom]Breloom[/pokemon], [pokemon=Claydol]Claydol[/pokemon], and (I think I'm missing someone here, help?). Common Edgequakers include [pokemon=Rhyperior]Rhyperior[/pokemon] and (halp).[/QUOTE]

In case of an ability, you would do, for example:

Levitator - A Pokemon with the ability [ability=Levitate]Levitate[/ability]

In case of an item, you would do, for example:
Lefties - A synonym to the hold item [item=Leftovers]Leftovers[/item]

Also, in case of abbrevated forms of any one of the above that would fit in both the "term" category and another one, always use [term=X] instead of something else, so in case of "Lefties", if you use that word in an example (which you really shouldn't, but just for the sake of explaining this), do not do the following:

[item=Leftovers]Lefties[/item]

This is because this format is mainly going to be implemented so we can easily add links later on, and since Lefties itself is most likely going to be a term, I'd prefer to have this link take someone to its term in the Glossary, rather than to the hold item Leftovers, even though both would work as an explanation of the term at hand, but as I said, this was purely an example to show you what I mean when I say a word/term may fall in both the "term" category and another one of the above mentioned.

EDIT 1: I forgot to mention all spaces in anything that appears after the equal sign inside the tags (as in: [item=) should be replaced with an underscore.

EDIT 2: In case of the move Hidden Power, followed by its type (for example: Hidden Power Ice), do it like this: [move=Hidden_Power]Hidden Power Ice[/move], so that in the end it will just link to our description of the move Hidden Power, which should be enough.

EDIT 3: Update:

If you want to include a link to a list of moves that would help you in explaining the meaning of a term (for example, "Flinch"), you can do it like this: [movelist=<what_you_want_the_list_to_be_ordered_by>]text to link to this list[/movelist]

So for example: For a list of moves that have flinching effects, you can go [movelist=flinch]here[/movelist]

For a list of abilities, use [abilitylist][/abilitylist], for a list of pokemon you can use [pokemonlist][/pokemonlist] (for example: [pokemonlist=water]this is a list of Water pokemon[/pokemonlist]), etc... For now you can define your own methods of sorting (like sorting moves based on whether or not they can flinch). We'll see in the end if we can actually implement all these methods.

Also, if you want to link to a status condition such as Poison, use [status=poison]poison[/status]

So to summarize, these are the things you can/have to use as of now (Keep checking for updates though):

- [move][/move]
- [item][/item]
- [term][/term]
- [ability][/ability]
- [pokemon][/pokemon]
- [status][/status]
- [movelist][/movelist]
- [itemlist][/itemlist]
- [abilitylist][/abilitylist]
- [pokemonlist][/pokemonlist]

Thanks.

I'd rather have this glossary encompass as much of the "Pokémon Dictionary" as possible, so even terms that aren't as widely used as they once used to be should at the very least get a mention in here (just because they are in fact still used).
I think that because CS can refer to two terms is another reason why we should add it; so we can make people aware of this. CS is, as far as I know, still a common abbrevation to refer to either Choice Specs or Choice Scarf, so if this goes unexplained, there's bound to be some confusion over this. And it's exactly why I think it definitely does deserve its mention here.

Something like the following should be enough:

CS - A common abbrevation used to refer to one of two hold items: [item=Choice_Scarf]Choice Scarf[/item] or [item=Choice_Specs]Choice Specs[/item].

I'd say both should be used. "NB" has to refer to something (or at least, it will mention "Net Battle" in its explanation), so when using the term "NB" in here, it's pretty much obligatory to include "Net Battle" as well. Same goes for "shoddy" and "shoddybattle" I'd say.

Everything is fully updated as it is now. Currently, I am adding all submitted definitions to the glossary. We will be able to revise them for quality when we feel that all notable definitions have been added.

REMEMBER: please bold the term name.

Okay I've added all missing tags. If we keep this up we can easily keep track of the entire thing.

I'll start compiling that list of moves commonly abbrevated that haven't been covered by aldaron yet now.

1) This will have its own section...

2) ...when it's finished. Seriously, this isn't even close to being done so it'll take some time before we upload a finalized version onto the site.
