Intro
Hey guys, Million Daggers here. I’ve been using the Breedign Guides of X-Act and Peterko for a while and I’ve realised that while they’ve done a very good job of explaining most things, many new players will have no idea what they're talking about. They continue to explain, quite superfluously, the various formulas to calculate the steps you need to take to hatch Pokemon but neglect to talk about IV calculators. My job was to simplify it, make it easier to understand, and CLAIM IT FOR LIBELLDRA! Seeing as we didn’t have one <_<
Of course, over time as I get better at breeding I will add much more information, and perhaps even rival their guide, but until then, this’ll have to do.
Overall, the purpose here is to show you that, while AR and hacking are quick, breeding is much more rewarding, challenging and not too diffficult to grasp.
SECTION ONE
Preparation
wat r dem IV things?
1. The Magma Armor/Flame Body
Arceus knows it takes heat to get eggs to hatch, but where to get such heat? Thankfully, the delightful big shots at Game Freak had enough foresight to know that every step the player took to hatch that elusive perfect IV Aerodactyl, was a step closer to suicide. So, in Emerald, they created the abilities Flame Body and Magma Armour.
Having a Pokémon with this ability in your team will reduce the number of steps you need to take, in order for the egg to hatch, by roughly half.
The following Pokémon carry this ability:
Magma Armor (Prevents Pokémon form being frozen): Camerupt, Slugma, Magcargo
Flame Body (When another Pokémon makes contact with this one, it has a 30% of being burned): Magby, Magmar, Slugma, Magcargo
Where to find Pokemon with Magma Armor/Flame Body
Slugma ad Magcargo, are by far the easiest to catch with theses abilities, so make them your priority.
Head to Stark Mountain and go inside you have a 35% chance of getting either Slugma or Magcargo in the first area. Throw a Dusk Ball and you're done.
Rule #1 Always have a Pokemon with Flame Body/Magma Armour on your team when breeding
2. Everstoning
Oh those Game Freakians. They also knew about the pains of Nature Breeding! They fixed it with the wonderful Everstone! In past games, it was a next to usless object that stopped Pokémon from evolving if they were equipped with it. Perfect for trainers who couldn't be bothered moving their thumb an extra 10 millimitres to press B and cancel.
Now, if a female Pokémon is holding the item Everstone and breeds with a male Pokémon, the baby will have a
50% chance of having the same nature as the mother. Same goes for breeding with Ditto.
In short (well, not really):
A Male Pokémon breeding with a Female Pokémon holding an Everstone results in the baby having a 50% chance of having the same nature as the Female Pokémon.
Similarly, a Male Pokémon breeding with a Ditto holding an Everstone results in the baby having a 50% chance of having the same nature as Ditto.
Now, a Female Pokémon breeding with a Ditto holding an Everstone results in the baby having a 50% chance of having the same nature as Ditto. (Even if both the female Pokémon and Ditto hold Everstone, it will still be a 50% chance of the nature being transferred, and it will always be the Ditto nature that is transferred to the baby.)
And finally, a Genderless Pokémon breeding with a Ditto holding an Everstone results in the baby having a 50% chance of having the same nature as Ditto.
Where can I score some Everstone?
Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald: Granite Cave.
FireRed and LeafGreen: Pokémon Center near the Rock Tunnel.
Diamond and Pearl: Mine Underground. Quite common, indeed.
Rule #2 Use an Everstone to get Natures right
3. The Ditto Effect
Ditto, let it be said, is the Ultimate Parents. Sure it won't tke you fishing or buy you a new bicycle but it will create, for you, a Killing Machine.
To the breed IVs, you'll need the Ditto with the right stuff. And congrats, you get to catch it yourself
Now the daunting part is this: There is a 17.3% chance for the Ditto you catch to have a perfect 31 in a random stat.
But if we wnat to breed with it, we need the Nature, which segues nicel into Part 3.1
3.1 Synchronize
Synchronize is an ability which, outside of battle, ensures that every Pokémon you encounter has a 50% chance of carrying the smae nature as the synchronizer.
In DP, the easiest to get are Ralts and Abra. There are two ways of getting one:
1) Catch one. Abra is found Route 203 & 205. If yo want to use it as a Synchronizer, get rid of Teleport so the Ditto can't escape.
Ralts is found on route 203 & south 204, but with a Pokéradar, so choose your poison.
2) Breed it. With a Ditto carrying the required nature. Catch-22.
3.2) Catching Ditto
Once you've completed the Sinnoh Dex by having seen all the Pokémon native to Sinnoh, Professor Rowan will give you the PokéRadar. Head to Canalave City and buy 100 Super/Max Repels. Head east, onto Route 218. Stand in the middle of the grass without your bike and use one of the Repels, followed by the PokéRadar, you should now how to use it so i won't explain in too much detail.
Regardless, 18% of the time, a Ditto will appear in one of these patches. After you capture the Ditto, the grass will shake again, and you generally want to head for a patch that is furthest away blah blah, to get your next Ditto.
Ok, if you seriousl don't know how to work the radar, here's a video guide
[embed]<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/dkeKPlBYYbs&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/dkeKPlBYYbs&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>[/embed]
Catching them is another story. I like using Ralts as a Syncher the best, with its 235 catch rate, it is almost guaranteed snag, after Ditto Transforms, with a Dusk Ball or Repeat Ball.
How many Ditto you need to catch
17.3% is not fun.
X-Act of Smogon ran these calcs.
It actually turns out that the average amount of Ditto you need to catch in order to get six Dittos with one perfect IV, one Ditto for every stat, is 85. You might need less than this, or more, but 85 is the average number of Dittos you'll need to catch. This is slightly less than 3 full boxes of Ditto. To get these six Dittos, all with the nature you want, you’ll need to catch twice this number, or an average of 170 Dittos. You might think that 170 Dittos are a lot, but remember that you need to do this only once (it only takes a few hours) and then always use these Ditto whenever you need to breed.
4. Moveset Breeding
So you know about IVs, and EVs for that matter. But, if you don’t know about Moveset Breeding, all I can say is:
“How was your extended exile in Siberia?â€
Anyway, it’s very important to figure out your movesets before breeding anything. Heres a quick rundown on the moves that can be passed:
Species Specific moves: When you breed to Pokemon of the same evolution line, the baby will know any moves that are capable of being learnt by both parents.
TM or HM moves: If the male parent knows a TM or HM move and the baby can learn that same TM or HM, the baby will be born with that move.
Egg moves: If the
male parent knows a move which the baby can only learn as an Egg move, the baby will be born with that move. Check out a guide like Serebii to check out these moves.
Rule #3 Make up your mind about a moveset before breeding egg moves, or for that matter, breeding at all.
SECTION TWO
Breeding
Makin' the Lovin'
Now once you get it all right. The Pokemon are definitely going to breed, and you walk enough steps you’ll get your first egg!
1. The Species of the Baby
The Pokémon that will hatch from the egg will be at level 1, of course, and will be the same species as the mother.
Rule #4 The Baby will always be the same species as its mother
Exceptions to the rule:
1) If one of the parents is Ditto, then the offspring's species is the other parent's first evolution step.
2) If the mother is Nidoran♀then the offspring will either be Nidoran♀ or Nidoran♂, since they are treated as the same species.
3) If the mother is Illumise, then the offspring wll either be Volbeat or Illumise, since they are treated as the same species.
4) A Marill or Azumarill's offspring will be Marill unless one of the parents is holding the item Sea Incense, in which case the baby will be Azurill.
5) A Wobbuffet's offspring will be Wobbuffet unless one of the parents is holding the item Lax Incense, in which case the baby will be Wynaut.
6) A Roselia or Roserade's offspring will be Roselia unless one of the parents is holding the item Rose Incense, in which case the baby will be Budew.
7) A Chimecho's offspring will be Chimecho unless one of the parents is holding the item Pure Incense, in which case the baby will be Chingling.
8 ) A Sudowoodo's offspring will be Sudowoodo unless one of the parents is holding the item Rock Incense, in which case the baby will be Bonsly.
9) A Mr.Mime's offspring will be Mr.Mime unless one of the parents is holding the item Odd Incense, in which case the baby will be Mime Jr..
10) A Chansey or Blissey's offspring will be Chansey unless one of the parents is holding the item Luck Incense, in which case the baby will be Happiny.
11) A Mantine's offspring will be Mantine unless one of the parents is holding the item Wave Incense, in which case the baby will be Mantyke.
12) A Snorlax's offspring will be Snorlax unless one of the parents is holding the item Full Incense, in which case the baby will be Munchlax.
13) A Manaphy's offspring will be Phione, but Phione is itself a final evolution stage Pokémon.
Rule #5 All Pokemon breed barring baby Pokemon, Nidorina, Nidoqueen, Unown, Ditto and all Legendaries

Also, Ditto can breed with any Pokémon from any egg group.
Rule #7 You cannot breed a genderless Pokémon with a Pokémon that is not Ditto
The best part of being in the Ground group is that they can learn any egg move wuite easily with Smeargle.
3. Compatibility
After you deposit two Pokémon in the Day Care, the Day Care man will tell you their breeding compatibility.
He starts off by saying your Pokemon are both fine, then he tells you one of the following four phrases:
“The two prefer to play with other Pokémon than each other.â€
This means one of the following four cases:
a) One or both parents cannot breed (Rule #5)
b) They are from different egg groups (Rule #6)
c) You are breeding a genderless Pokémon with a Pokémon that is not Ditto (Rule #7)
d) You a breeding a male Pokémon with another male Pokémon, or a female Pokémon with another female Pokémon. (Common sense)
If the situation violates any of the above rules, you cannot breed those two Pokemon.
“They don´t seem to like each other much.â€
This means that the Pokémon being bred are different but have the same trainer IDs. They will take quite a while to produce an egg.
“The two seem to get along.â€
This means either that the Pokémon being bred are the same Pokémon and have the same trainer IDs, or that they are different Pokémon having different trainer IDs. They will take a moderate time to produce eggs.
“The two seem to get along very well.â€
This means that the Pokémon being bred are the same Pokémon having different trainer IDs. They produce eggs quickly.
Rule #8 By using Pokemon of different species / same group, that are trade, you will save hours, if not days of breeding.
4. Hatching Routes
In Diamond and Pearl, the road running down Solaceon; from Route 210 to Route 209, is the trail of choice where you can bike through it back and forth while you're breeding. This road is 123 steps long. The distance from the Day Care man standing in front of the day care to the top of Route 210 is 64 steps. The distance between him and the bottom of Route 209 is 71 steps. Your thumbs wear out quite quickly.
Rule #9 Use Solaceon Town’s road!
6. IV
IV Chains
An IV chain is a chain of parents with which you get your Pokémon with the IVs you want. It is one of two methods you could use.
If you want to breed a Naive Chimchar with perfect IVs in Attaqck, Special attack and Speed, you do the following:
Breed with a 31 Attack Ditto with the Chimchar until you have a 31 Attack Chimchar
Next, breed this Chimchar with a Ditto with a perfect 31 Soecial Attack IV, until you get a Chimcharwith a 31 IV in Attack and Special Attack.
Finally, breed this Chimchar with a Naïve 31 Speed IV Ditto, until you get a Chimchar with a 31 IV in Attack, Special Attack and Speed
This can be represented as follows:
Chimchar x/x/x/x/x/x + Ditto 31/x/x/x/x/x = Chimchar 31/x/x/x/x/x
Chimchar 31/x/x/x/x/x + Ditto x/x/31/x/x/x = Chimchar 31/x/31/x/x/x
Chimchar 31/x/31/x/x/x + Naïve Ditto x/x/x/x/31/x = Naïve Chimchar 31/x/31/x/31/x
The less IVs you want to be perfected, the less eggs needed to hatch
Pedigrees
This method is quite time consuming but does not require you to catch any Dittos at all. Simply take your first Naïve Ditto (hopefully with a decent IV, always shoot for 31) and breed with Chimchar. After several (I calculated an average 4 eggs before this happens) eggs, you should have a Chimchar with 31 IVs in the first stat – let’s say Attack. Continue breeding until you receive a Naïve female with 31 Atk IVs (although a 12.5% chance isn’t very good), this will be Char-1. Now take the male and breed it with another Ditto with good IVs in SpAtk, the 31 IV SpAtk baby will be Char-2. Breed Char-1 and Char-2 and you after not such a long time you will get a baby with a randomly produced Spd stat of 31. This is Char-3 and has a Naïve nature.
Now the pedigree solution, is largely trial and error, but
does not require you to go mass Ditto hunting which is a bonus. Just be sure to always check every IV and write it down. This method allows you the freedom to switch to more suitable parents.
SECTION THREE
Hatching
Let's get this show on teh Solaceon Town road
1.Number of steps to hatch
http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-dp/
scroll down to ‘steps to hatch’. See that wasn’t complicated, was it?
2. Soft reset Trick
This method is based on the fact that in Emerald, Diamond and Pearl, gender, nature (personality) and ability (trait) are already set (locked) as soon as the egg is created, before you take it. That means that if you save exactly before taking the egg and then soft reset, the Pokémon inside the egg will have the same gender, nature and ability if you load again.
1. Save in front of the Day Care grandpa.
2. Take the egg.
3. Bike on the breeding route.
4. Ignore the next egg proposed to you by the Day Care grandpa.
5. Hatch the egg.
6. Check the newly hatched Pokémn to see whether it does have the desired gender, nature and ability and
a) If it doesn´t have the desired gender/nature/ability, save in front of the Day Care grandpa again (there should be another egg waiting for you, which was produced while you hatched the first one) and repeat the process until you get a suitable baby.
b) If it does have the desired gender/nature/ability, but it doesn´t have the desired IVs, soft reset the game and take the egg again (gender/nature/ability won´t change, only the IVs), hatch and check the IVs, repeat the process until you get the IVs you want.
Pros:
1. The gender, nature and ability you want are set in stone.
2. This method is useful to get a female Pokémon with the right nature and a few perfect IVs.
3. It is also useful if the parents don´t like each other much.
Cons:
1. Not many babies are bred and checked using this method, which means that it can get hard to get the right IVs when there isn´t a high probability.
2. This method does not suit persons who care about game time more than anything else.
3. Checking IVs
Use any decent IV calculator to do this. However, seeing as your Pokemon hatch at level 1, you should stick them in the Day Care or pump them with Rare Candies till they are at about level 15. Then use one of the following:
http://www.serebii.net/games/iv-calcdp.shtml
http://www.metalkid.info/Pokemon/OnlineProgram/Calculators/IV.aspx
http://libelldra.com/ivcalculator/
(which unfortunately does not work yet)
Rule #10 Always raise your Pokemon to a high enough level before checking IVs
And that’s the Breeding Guide
FAQ
How do I breed Move Tutor moves?
If you have Emerald, check out the move tutor at the Battle Tower. Transfer the Pokemon that learnt this move, and breed if it is compatible
How do I get Volt Tackle?
When breeding for Pichu in Emerald, if any of the parents is a Pikachu or a Raichu holding the item Light Ball, then the baby Pichu will be born knowing the move Volt Tackle.
