Instead, this tournament will be what's known as a draft tournament. That is, pokemon are selected in much the same fashion as a baseball/basketball/football draft. There will be 8 players (any more than that and there really aren't enough usable pokemon to go around). These 8 players will then randomly be put in order. To avoid any accusations of cheating or rigging this order, I will put myself last.
Then, the first player in the order will pick a pokemon to use on his or her team. Then the second will do the same, and so on, until all eight players have picked their first pokemon. Obviously, once a pokemon has been chosen by one player, it cannot be chosen by anyone else.
Once all eight players have chosen their first pokemon, the order will reverse itself and players will pick their second. Then it will reverse again and players will pick their third, and so on, until each player has chosen eight pokemon. This will allow everyone two extras (although probably lower-tier stuff) to swap on and off of their team between rounds as they see fit.
So the draft would occur as follows:
Round 1
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 pick their pokemon in that order
Round 2
8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1
Round 3
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
Round 4
8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1
Round 5
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
Round 6
8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1
Round 7
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
Round 8
8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1
After the draft has completed, I will post the pokemon each player has chosen in the tournament main topic. Yes, this means you will know the eight pokemon your opponent has chosen before you face him or her. They will know your pokemon as well. This is half the fun of the tournament - such a situation makes for some very interesting mind games. However, you obviously won't know what moves they're running, or which two pokemon they've chosen not to include that round, until you actually battle.
You will most likely be using pokemon that you've never used before, or at least not pokemon that find themselves with a cozy little place on your everyday standard team. In addition, if you know what you're doing, your team will most likely change between each round. For this reason, battles for this tournament will take place on the ShoddyBattle simulator. Perfect stats all around, the ability to change your team at a moment's notice, and the ability to use whatever you want, whenever you want, will all be at your command. And if there is a debate over the outcome of a match (or someone is just being a n00b and reports a win when they actually lost), a simple copy of the battle log is all that's required to settle it.
I will create brackets at the beginning of the first round, and then players will be given a week to complete their first-round battle against their opponent. After that week has passed (or sooner, if all first-round battles are completed), the same process will occur for the second and third rounds. This tournament will be single-elimination; once you lose, you are out. With the increased length of each round, double-elimination would take too long.
