A new Advance Wars game has been dated, with a new (dark) plot and style. Natural disasters have wiped out 90% of the Earth's population, and an (entirely new?) cast of COs must set out to save the world. Here's a thread with info and screenshots:

This is awesome news.

I'm curious about the new COs, and what old ones will still be there. I sure as hell hope they don't completely abandon the COs they currently have.

Also, this screenshot looks a bit weird; it's totally different from AW:DS

Yeah, I'm a bit wary about the new style. I liked the cotton-candy-war-is-fun style of AWDS. Maybe it will grow on me...

Judging from that pic, I can't say I like it very much either. I loved the way AW:DS looked.

Also, you made a typo in the topic description:

Yeah, I edited my first post to fix that.

I'm sad to see the cute charm go; it looks like AW is trying to appeal to the "Halo 3" crowd. Maybe this is a smart move, maybe not. I just hope it retains its amazing gameplay.

I agree with Breloom about the style, but as long as it has the same gameplay I don't mind.

EDIT: Maybe a new publisher/designer took it over?

Nice link.
I seriously hope they don't get rid of all previous COs. If they don't want those COs to be in the main storyline they can always allow you to "transfer" them from the previous DS game for Advance Wars.

Map designer:
There are many apparent news in the map designer. A non-standard map (20x20) is present in a screenshot. The building limit has been increased to 99. The Black army can now be used in the designer, but we do not know if Green is still available...

For some reason, I like this a lot. I've always found it weird you couldn't use the Black Hole (is it still called Black Hole?) Army yourself in the design room.

I'm actually starting to like the new design. It seems like they wanted to make things more realistic, but even by doing so, I think they still maintained Advance Wars' previous "cute charm" in some way.

I can't wait to hear more about the COs and new units that will be available in this game.

(I moved this to HWYW)

Well, Orange Star is now Red Wolf, Blue Moon is now Blue Knight, and Yellow Comet is now Yellow Dragon. The new symbol for Black Hole is possibly an owl, and it appears that Green Earth has been axed.

But I loved Eagle...
On the other hand though, a complete new collection of COs might be a better way to go about things. Still, missing out on Grit, Max, Eagle and Kanbei sucks... Good ol' Sensei will be missed too.

Wait, no more Jess? BOLSHEVIK!

...But I'll probably buy the game, anyway...

BREAKING NEWS!
Advance Wars: Days of Ruin is now CONFIRMED to have Wi-fi and Voice Chat, among other things. Here's the article courtesy of advancewarsnet.com:

Days of Ruin news
Many news (preview articles) and media (screenshots, videos) of Days of Ruin were released today. We are working on compiling the information and making the videos available in our site. Meanwhile you can view the videos and read the previews in the original sources:
Videos: GameTab | IGN
Previews: 1Up | Kotaku

The news reveal that Tag Powers and dual-screen battles are gone, and CO Powers have been toned down. Nintendo WFC support has been confirmed: battling with voice chat and a global Map Center (much like our Design Maps) will be in the game - Intelligent Systems is turning into reality the dreams of many AW fans.

New units include the Motorbike, the Flare, the Duster and the Ship Plane. Various old units have been renamed as well, and many of them had their deployment price changed. This game will bring a change the the unit roster deeper than the one seen in AWDS.

The new main factions have been given names: Red is Rubinelle and Blue is Lazuria. The story will revolve around the war between these countries, and the occasional fight with external factions over the control of the planet, after 90% of mankind was exterminated in a meteor shower.

Noo!!! sad.gif Infantry costs 1.5k which means I need at least two capitals to get one unit. Well...at least Mechs are cheaper.

Couple of things.

1st the storyline. This story is kind of weird to me, but eh. I can always guess that Black Hole wants to get rid of any survivors and then by doing so they gain dominion over the world or something.

Something tells me a CO dies.

I hope Sami survived. dry.gif.

#2, Wi-Fi and CO Balance.
If you ever played Advance Wars just for fun and not war room, you would know that eventually you could find some pretty unbeatable tactics. Not just unbeatable... broken as hell.

1: Colin was broken, extremely. He could make 3 Neotanks to your one Neotank, even though his units were inferior statwise, sheer number ruled the day. His CO Powers only broke things further, with the ability to gain tons of money EASILY, and to then use that money to power all his units to Kanbei levels, and higher.

2: Grit was also very broken. How? Well in small maps especially, he could easily clog choke points with small meat shields, like infantry for cheap prices, then build up not-too-expensive high power artillaries to bombard you. He didn't even need Rockets, but if he used them, they were just over kill. His CO Powers only broke it further, and he didn't even need his SCOP. In larger maps, he gains the use of Battleships and carriers, which dominate land and sea, and just require different meat shields.

3: Hachi, another broken CO, is a similar case to Colin. Only his units aren't already weakened, and can't be super-powered. He CAN however completely devastate opponents with his SCOP, allowing him to build ground units from CITIES! Hachi can easily fortify his defenses by building piperunners in the most convienent of areas. He can unit spam almost as easily as Colin, just without the negative effects.

4: Nell. Her freaking CO Powers let there be a chance that infantries kill Megatanks at 1 HP against 10 HP.. Why not just spam infantry and then CO power rush your way into kamikazing everything. Retaliation doesn't help much either.

Everyone else is pretty well balanced. High tiers being people like Max, and Kanbei, Jess as well.

Here's a new GameSpot interview, with some new info:

Sounds like all old COs are out. sad.gif
It also goes more into detail about Wi-Fi and the core strategy of the game.
