I just recently looked back at games i own that i havent finished or gotten a good rank on, and the majority are 2D games (in b4 i suck @ g4m1ng keep reading).  I think since 3D has moved in games have gotten relatively easier.  I can complete OoT and Majoras Mask but still have trouble with Lttp and Zelda 2 ( :'( ) .

The only game i think in 3D is harder than 2D is Sonic and it isnt the level design and gameplay that makes it hard.

I concur. Except on the Sonic thing. They're only harder due to shitty gameplay and camera.

If the game is 3D or 2D, it doesnt really matter, difficulty is the key to how hard or easy any game is, level design structure plays a big role too, lets take good old Sonic the hedgehog 2, from the Sega Mega Drive, and Sonic's wii game (whatever its called i've forgotten the name lol).

Indeed Sonic 2 is hard, but it starts off easy and builds up the difficulty over time, the main things which make sonic 2 progressively harder, is the holes in the landscape, monsters all bunched up in one tight spot, loops inconviently placed, and of course, running out of coins from one simple touch of a monster.

Though i havent played Sonic wii, i cant really compare it as well as Sonic 2. Maybe someone would like to take over for me? ;)

But also note that the majority of 3D games tell you what to do.  In the old 2D games there was almost never any help.  You had to do trial and error.

the old 2d games were in 16bit graphics, and didnt have enough internal memory on the cartridge to include a tutorial.

but thankfully, jesus invented THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL! this glorious booklet told you the controls and the purpose of the storyline! it told you how not to kill yourself and instead told you how to kick ass.

i can't compare sonic to any other game in terms of difficulty, i find them all easy, mainly cos ive played the series to death and know what to do before i even play the game. for example, the mega drive games, sonic 2 and sonic and knuckles, i can get all 7 chaos emeralds before the end of stage 1 act 2 ;) meaning i can become super sonic before the first boss

Well i doubt you could honestly say Sonic'06 is easy.  In retrospect it is but its just plain tedious.  And for a game about speed the thing you see the most is the loading screen.

EDIT:  I will also note the fact that casual gaming wasnt sortof there yet, so it was not particulary games made to be easy.

OH!  and

OBJECTION!

Qwertipman, to get to the special zone in each stage you need 50 rings then a checkpoint right?  And you lose those rings after going to the special zone.  How exactly can you get 350 rings, before act 3?  I find that most illogical.

if you've played the game as much as i have, you'll know that the all the rings and boxes in the act respawn after you exit the special zone. oh, and theres only 2 acts in sonic 2, with 3 posts in the first act, and 4 in the second.
