Note: Some emulators are useless without the proper audio/input/graphics plugins and BIOSes.
[hr]
Tip #1: The CPU is the major factor that determines speed overall in any emulator. Most emulators aren't optimized as yet to be run with little CPU resource usage. If that's the case, then consider upgrading your CPU to a dual, quad, or octo core. AMD's
Athlon X2/FX/Phenom processor and Intel's
Core 2 Duo/Quad/Extreme are some options.
Tip #2: The Graphics Card is what effects performance and speed in most emulators that emulate typical 3D consoles like PS1/N64/PSP/PS2/GC, and usually never 2D consoles. If you are onboard, make sure to turn off AA/AF and lower the resolution. Otherwise, I recommend an nVidia GeForce 7-9 Series or ATi's Radeon X1900+ / HD 2000+
Tip #3: Having more RAM (memory) inside your computer and having a faster hard drive will
not increase emulation speeds. It's either the CPU or GPU that will.
Tip #4: Disable all startup processes using MSCONFIG and leave these services only ->
Multimedia Class Scheduler, Windows Audio/Endpoint Builder, Group Policy Client, Task Scheduler, Plug & Play. This ensures that the Operating System doesn't put load on the CPU while the emulator is currently running. If you have multiple processes and services running, "hidden tasks" (non-background/system tray apps) will put stress on the CPU and randomly lag the emulator. And these hidden tasks that run doesn't necessarily cause your hard drive access light indicator to blink...
Tip #5: If you want internet access along with those limited aforementioned services, enable the
DHCP Client service.
Tip #6: To avoid processes in Task Manager such as Windows Vista's "TrustedInstaller" from effecting the process of your emulator and causing it to randomly lag, set the priority of the emulator to either
High or
RealTime. This allows for your CPU to pay the most attention to it. Also, set any other process taking up CPU usage to
Low (eg. TrustedInstaller, etc). Remember that you have the option of disabling startup processes/services that initiates these random tasks in the first place by using MSCONFIG as stated before.
