1986 - Pokemon Emerald (U) IPS patch.zip
use IPSWin2.0 to apply the patch.
if you still encounter troubles, use an earlier version of visualboy advance such as 1.7.2
you can find and download most all the visualboy versions within this thread

Did you download and correctly apply the patch?
It in itself should have corrected the white screen error

How to do this :
open the Emulator, go to "Options" located alone the top.
Then go down to "Emulator" then make sure "Real time clock" is enabled
