[quote]
Australian naturalist and television personality Steve Irwin has been killed by a stingray during a diving expedition off the Australian coast.

Mr Irwin, 44, died after being struck in the chest by the stingray's barb while he was filming a documentary in Queensland's Great Barrier Reef.

Paramedics from Cairns rushed to the scene but were unable to save him.

Mr Irwin was known for his television show The Crocodile Hunter and his work with native Australian wildlife.

Police in Queensland confirmed the environmentalist's death and said his family had been notified. Mr Irwin was married with two young children.

"It is believed that Mr Irwin collapsed after being stung by a stingray at Batt Reef off Port Douglas at about 1100 (0100 GMT)," a police statement quoted by AFP news agency said.

"His crew called for medical treatment and the Queensland medical helicopter responded. However Mr Irwin had died."

Kinda a shock, but I was expecting it some day, after all, doing the things he does, something was going to happen sometime or another.

I think its a tad more then "Just a Fish"
afterall on the news it said it took a chunk outta his heart, and they inject poison, so he had no chance,
But I always expected him to die at the hands of one of these creatures, Its like playing with fire, and your gonna get burned, sad tho everyone loved his shows

I've seen stingrays. They seem very sluggish.

I find it hard to believe that it would have the strength to penetrate someones ribcage.

Crazy.

Australia hasn't had too much luck this week with two major Aussie icons dying, Steve Irwin AND Peter Brock.

I never realised how loved Steve Irwin was around the world and only realised that he was such a world-renowned conservator until his death. I had the pleasure of meeting him once when i was up in queensland at his zoo (his father's) and he's a really amazing guy to even just say Hi to. I always thought his happy, crazy kinda personality was just a camera stunt and public act but from what i've heard and experienced, he really does give a shit about what he talks about.

Anyway, tributes to Steve and donate what you can for his charity!
