This is called tunnling.

There's something similar for LAN enabled games. It's called warp pipe, you can find it here.

The difference with this method is that its possible with any multiplayer game, and not just limited to LAN games, like Mario Kart DD.

Are you sure? I see no mention of this trick working on anything other than SSBM. I notice that it says it only works on ver. 1.0 of SSBM even. It seems that this online thing is even more exclusive than warppipe.

Hmmm.... from what I gathered (from other sites), it said this method is compataible with pretty much any multiplayer GC game, although now it appears they were wrong.
