Apparently UMD sales are doing very poorly. VERY poorly.
So what happens? 3 of the 5 major UMD movie contribuors have backed out!

that's right folks, you know that system that people were wetting themselves over? The one that plays movies, MP3s AND games? Well seems people don't care that much.

If you wanted to see a film, you could buy a memory stick pro duo for the price of 2 or 3 UMD movies and put your own films on there.

Basically i think it's funny. let me know what you guys think!

I think it's too bad.  UMD's have so much more potential than just the PSP; handheld gaming was just a good start.  I don't know anything about the expense of production as compared to dvd's, but it seemed to me that it would be the logical replacement for them.

An exclusive format for a Sony handheld system only? no UMD TV players, no way to make your own, Sony has restricted it so much they didn't give it much of a chance. And the video is all you get, no special features, nothing. DVDs are celarly superior.

As for that article I posted, it mentions that Sony is going to try and convince people to stay with UMDs by making a PSP to TV adapter. Wouldn't that be great? The only way to play UMD movies is to restrict it's freedom as a portable unit to play movies. I think a consumer is better off buying a DVD player for $100 than a PSP for $300+.

But that's a corporate problem, not a technological problem.  Those restrictions are exactly why the UMD is doing as bad as it is; the PSP is so expensive because it does more than movies, but I'm sure they could easily produce a UMD movie player for at least the same price and quality, if not better.

They're not going to though. That's the thing. It's sony we're dealign with.
They're known for their 'exclusive' media. MiniDisc, Memory Stick and UMD. All media that they invented and are only used on their products. They shoot themselves in the foot everytime by not liscencing 2nd party use. AND THEY KEEP DOING IT.

UMD is an inferior media comapred to DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-ray. No one needed another media type, and people are frustrated as it is havign to buy a DVD version of their favourite VHS film, and now Son'ys forcing the UMDs on them. Not a good move in my mind.

I know this was going to happen. I never imagined UMD movies taking off.
