Actually, from the research I've done, it appears to be quite different, what you said thaddius is what was said to cover up what really happened.
What happened was, that since sega has just made the sega CD (or megacd), Nintendo wanted to make a CD based console to battle against it, well they went to sony, whch the two cmpanys together started to create the PSX, but, during development, behind Nintendo's back, sony has lawyers working day and night so Sony could own the PSX, and so Nintendo couldn't do anything about it, sometime after, no long before the prototype PSX is ready, Sony quickly pulled out, taking the PSX and snes soundchip`with them, and Nintendo couldn't do a thing about it......
I can't remember where i read that article, if I can find it again, I'll post a link of it here.

Our stories are exactly the same except you didn't have anything about the CDi. The CDi has a mario and two zelda games, that's cause they used some of the liscencing that was in their contract with Nintendo.
The PSX was supposed to be a CD addon for the SNES, in response to the Sega CD. That's why Nintendo approached Phillips, then Sony.
