NINTENDO TO UNVEIL IN-CAR GAME BOY ADVANCE SYSTEM AT CES ON THURSDAY

The site which broke the news about Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Mario Pinball, Nintendo Classics Collection, Metroid Pinball and many other Nintendo secrets -- Nintendo Insider -- is now unveiling Nintendo's newest gadget to the world -- an in-car Game Boy Advance system!

What you see in the picture above is a 10.2 inch display, which can play CD's, DVD's and... Game Boy Advance cartridges! If you're out of the car, you can detach the device and take it with you anywhere; but when you're back in, attach it back to your car and let people play the Game Boy Advance on a bigger screen while on the go!

This device is loaded with other features, including infrared headphones -- offering wireless convenience for passengers -- auxiliary jacks, a 6-pin serial port and, for the Game Boy Advance, a side loading game slot. The device also integrates to the vehicle network and can be commanded and controlled by the driver.

Nintendo will announce its partnering company tomorrow.

You heard it here first at Nintendo Insider!

Wow!

I think that sounds great, I never thought that they would have made a GBA in that way. Since it can play DVD's and CD's with a 10.2 inch display, the price tag will be VERY high.

Can't wait to get more information from Nintendo about this one.....

I personally think this company Nintendo is partnering with is Panasonic, since it is them which Nintendo gets all their Disc technology, such as the gamecube mini-DVd technology.

Ok, it has been officially comfermed by Nintendo who is making this device, it is the company known as Visteon Corporation. Here is a link to some info about his device:http://www.visteon.com/products/automotive/fes_dock_gba.shtml

They should really focus on their console instead of...this. Consoles = more money (IMO)

If another company is manufacturing the product they aren't putting any resources into it. Think of the panasonic q. it's a gamecube made by panasonic that plays dvds. Nintendo didn't lose any money on the matter cause they didn't make it, but instead gained royalties from panasonic for using their technology. This is a similar setup. Don't worry. Nintendo will put as much of their resources into the revolution as possible.

Controlled by the driver?  Shouldn't the driver be focused on slightly more important things like, I don't know, driving?

A prototype of the pad has been recently revealed:

I know what you british/irish people are already saying:
Hey, thats the gamepad used for SKY digital television!
Well, I have no idea why its like that, but, here some new details upon this new device taken directly from joystiq.com

Mario was on-hand this morning when Visteon officially unveiled its latest dockable entertainment system featuring Nintendo's GBA under a tent outside of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Visteon's Greg Gyllstrom called the unit the "ultimate backseat babysitter." Available this spring, the docking station features a drop-down screen with inverted image capabilities and car stereo integration. In addition, the system comes standard with wireless headphones, wireless (infrared) controller, and wired gamelink capability with a separate GBA. Nintendo's Peter Eck described the partnership as "a little unusual," as Nintendo rarely licenses its hardware to third parties.

Although this will certainly help to solidify the GBA's dominance in the portable market, we found that the Visteon prototype on display was not up to par with GBA standards. The generic controller features five face buttons (a, b, c, d, and select), "help" and "back-up," and R & L buttons on the rear. Visteon's rep explained that the five face buttons will translate into 3 a-buttons and 2 b-buttons. Huh?

The video resolution also left much to be desired. While the GBA feed will not fill the entire 10.2-inch screen, it has been stretched into 16:9 (from 4:3), making for an awkward transition. However, Visteon claims that the retail model will feature an even bigger, sharper image. Needless to say, the engineers have their work cut out for them.

Ultimate backseat babysitter?

Video games  and tv are not babysitters.

What is probably means is that it keeps the children under control and quiet.

Obviously, but it shouldn't be advertized as a babysitter. Some parents take that too far.

I agree, thaddius, but we are already past the age when the television became the 'ultimate' babysitter.  But I guess that's besides the point.

A nice, sharp image would be nice.  When I emulate gba games I always expand to 3x it's size, which is convenient for the screen but things become blurry.  The small screen is good for on the go, but if you're sitting down for long periods of time a big, clear image would be great.  Of course, I would prefer a console, even in the car, but whatever they are willing to give.
Well, the company creating this GBA/DVD player have said that the final version will have a much sharper image.
