I'm guessing that you just take the pic, desaturate it and work either with duplicate copies using selection tools (selecting the parts with colour and deleting the rest) or with layer masks.

Well, I can imagine two ways. One being, render out the part you want in color, make it a seperate layer, and make the background black and white from there.

Another being duplicate the layer twice, set the top layer to darken. Make a blank middle layer, between the two of the render, and color it in on the blank layer.

Something like this?



All I did was make a Hue/Saturation layer, lowered the saturation to zero, then brushed in black, in the hue/sat layer, on top of the sword.
