Can I save directly onto the SD card, or would it just ovewrite the the save of the Ds game inserted?

You can do both!
There's an option to right click on the ds game before you patch it for the supercard, to make it so it saves to either the inserted DS card or the inserted SD\CF card (depending on which supercard you have).

Umm... that's a complicated question.
I've heard that kingston ones tend to be the best, but to be sure, check out the forums on the unnofficial supercard website.

I think I'm in trouble. I ordered the superpass thinking it would be alright as I brought the Ds on release. (The new ds firmware requires super pass 2)

On the gameboy-advance.net site it says that:

*Who needs 2nd generation PassMe2?

In the new colored DS consoles Nintendo has made some changes to the Firmware that made regular PassMe Key incompatible so an updated 2nd generation passme's were released, but the are a little bit more complicated to use so if you have an older DS stick with the 1st gen.
So who HAS TO HAVE the new 2nd gen PassMe Key:

    * Owners of Chinese version DS = iQue DS.
    * Japan Version, Serial Number begin with NJH/NJF/NJM, the second number >=2
    * USA Version, have not a result.
    * EUR Version, SN begin with NEH/NEM, most are new version.
    * All version which bought after Oct. 2005.
"

Mines a Europe version with a NEH sn will I need to buy a Super pass 2?

You might have to sadly.

The best way to find out is if your passme doesn't work.
