What is the best file format?  For animations I use .gif, and otherwise I normally use .jpg, but I just made a sig that looked terrible as a .jpg and fine as a .png .  Why is that?  It seems strange to me that some formats work some of the time and not all of the time.

There's no choice for animation (gif), unless you want to include swf (flash) files.

I personally prefer png because it supports transparency like gif. Though for stuff with no transparent areas, I still use jpg.

I always use .png for my images now, .jpg is good for some images but certain ones look best in .png so I suggest that you save them in both formats if you are not sure and use whichever one looks better.

.gif files load faster unless they are animated.

transparents- png
animations- gif
everything else- jpg

they probably came out bad as a jpg because you didnt set it top the highest quailty.
jpg is the basically the highest qual format that you can use online.

Actually, the quality was turned down, which is strange because I didn't know it had a quality setting, let alone moved it.  Must have done it by accident.  But I have been using .png's a lot more that I used to, since I learned how to use transparency to my advantage.
