Rendering takes ALOT of time and very hard to master IMO.

What you need to do is basically open the pic then click on filter >> extract (alt+cntrl+x) then just shape out the render you want to cut out. You can adjust the brush-size to use for cutting out. You can also use preview so you can see what your work would look like when it's done and if you dont like the result, you can just fix it.

How about trying to use the lasso tool instead. Im not sure how to render lasso tool since I use the extract option to render. If you want renders for your signature, I suggest you go to www.gamerenders.com for renders. You can also ask their forum how to render if you want more specific and helpful details.

I just read about using the Quick Mask option for cutting out a render, and it seemed to work for me pretty well.

To get into Quick Mask mode you click the right hand rectangle with a circle inside it from the tools window. Then you brush the outline of the render in black.  The colored areas will be selected when you leave Quick Mask mode.  After you have your render outlined you use the Magic Wand to select everything inside the outline, the stuff you want for the render, then hit Alt-Backspace to fill.  If you accidently colored an area that you don't want just brush in white over that area.  Then leave Quick Mask mode by clicking the white rectangle with a circle in it, right next to the button used to get into Quick Mask.  Now only the render is selected, so you can either move it to where you need it or invert selection to delete the background.

Still takes a lot of time, but it might work for you.

You can use the wand tool.
I used it.

That is probably the easiest way, but doesn't always work, and even when it does it doesn't look the best.  But it really shouldn't matter which method one uses, the more time one spends on the render the better it should turn out.

magic eraser and magic wand leaves rough edges
extract and lasso tool take forever and are very tedious to use
just use the eraser with a soft tip for curves and solid tip for straight lines.

magic eraser and magic wand weren't meant to be used alone.
extract doesn't really take forever if you know what you're doing, but then, you'll probably have to clean up with the eraser after extracting too.

However, using eraser alone would take longer than if you combined it with another tool.
