Peter Jackson has two styles that he has shown people. One is that he stays very true to the origional with a few changes to make it his own (for example, look at the LotR movies). His other style is to completly change it leaving a few things intact, but still end up with the core of the origional (King Kong). Mana, and Deep are refering to things that Peter would have no hand in as they are the script. What the Director does is figures out how things should look and how scenes will be put together. For instance, take a look at the Battle of Helm's Deep. In the books, this battle was portrayed as bloody, and dark, but only peter could have insisted that they spend several months filming this battle IN THE RAIN. Even after they had finished filming and the movie was almost ready for its debuet, he called up eveyone and sent them out there so they could refilm the entire battle because when they were editing it, he decided it wasn't how he thought it should be.
