my suggestion is to read Fundamentals by Flarester.  You'll find it in the Tutorials/FAQs thread.

snuffles asked:

how do i change the map selection i.e change from plain to snow?

heres my answers from having knowledge of making my own game:
sprites can be taken from paint by left clicking, then dragging, make the square
until you got all of the sprites that you want. Now right click inside of the square and go down to copy. open up a new folder called "my game" go in there and make a new bitmap and call it whatever you want. Paste your sprite in there.

your best chance to make a game is to tell us what program maker your using, then we can find a tutorial for it which'll tell you everything you need to know about making your game :)

[/quote] you are in luck for the different areas of the map question, ok first go to the event layer(its one of the options on the bar at the top) and double click on the ground where you want the entrance to the next area to be and click on the <> on the first page select "teleport" then on the drop down menu select the next area/map to enterwhen stepping on that space. I hope I helped you good luck in your game!

Ask Tails about the non test play thing but to not have to press the main button, change the event trigger to hero touch.

On the bar at the top it should have something to click called resource manager in that you go down the list to the thing want to import (in your case character sheets) then select "import" go to the file that your sprites are held in and then upload them into your game.
I hope you understood that.
