It's more on a comparison point of view, Final Fantasy VII was a complete let down for me. I played Final Fantasy VII after playing Final Fantasy III (or VI). And the lack of any new type of innovation in VII was just competely missing. It basically stole gameplay mechanics and plot from each of the previous Final Fantasy games, and it simply felt like they made a complete mess of trying to incorporate them altogether.
When they combined that with rather mediocre 3D Graphics, (alot of people thought they were really good, i felt they were just ok) and used immense amounts of money to hype up the game as the 'First Ever 3D RPG' (which is a load of rubbish as there were many 3D RPG's released before on PC, and the First Ever 3D RPG for Playstation was Wild Arms) it was just a huge disappointment to be playing this RPG that was very uninspired, lacked innovation and originality, and was just not much fun at all to play.
I dislike overhyped games a lot, but if they live up to their potential, i would hardly care at all, but Final Fantasy VII for me, didn't live up to anything that the hype, the trailers, the fanboys had promised. It just wasn't good enough for me, i didn't like anything about the game at all, i'd seen it all before from playing other games, and at least if it were to rely mainly on it's Graphics, at least make the Graphics Good and 2D rather than Bad in 3D.
The Final Fantasy games after VII though were very good, and rated up there against the original 2D Final Fantasy games. They brought in new Gameplay concepts, and although they weren't that popular (Alot of Final Fantasy VII fanboys hated the new gameplay mechanics of Final Fantasy VIII, mainly because the extra challenge was 'too hard' for them) they at least were original and put new life into every new Final Fantasy game as having it's own concepts that put it apart from the rest. VII i felt was simply a mix of them and was nothing special.
i'd better just end it here before i waste anymore time on another one of these topics lmao.
