Me and my friends are trying to link together with use of vbalink173.zip on the game Legend of Zelda: Four Swords...

I gave them that, made sure they zipped it to C:\games\vbalink, and then we set up the control scheme to match our preference. I'm 2, for Red Link. My friend is 1, Green Link. and another is 3, Blue Link.

Then after setting the default controllers correctly, we decided Green Link, 1, would be server. We all go to Options->Link->Options on VBA after having FS up and everything. Then we left the timeout to 1000. Then Green, the server link, uses 3 players, no speed hacks. He presses start. Me and Blue use Client, put in Green's IP address, and the  pressed connect.

Nothing happens. All there is to see is a window that either does:

A. Says on the title of the window "Connecting with other players", while the bar keeps going up, then restarts, goes up, restarts, over and over.

OR

B. It says in a seperate small window "Cannot connect with server" or something like that, you press ok or close it, and then it continues to do letter A.

What the heck is going on here?! We've done several variations like setting the timeout to below 200, or above 10000, we've changed roles, I've done server, Blue's done server... What are we to do!?  :'(

Letter B happens more often than not, and sometimes if I'm server, I get a 10048 error when I press "Start!"

Please help, anyone...

btw, sorry for double post, but if you see another topic, this is the better one, I don't know why this board doesn't show it now..

It doesn't take much to modify your post. Apologizing for double-posting doesn't mean you can then do it. First warning.

This means that your guys connection is not secure enough for it to be able to connect and identify with each other.

Solution: Use Ethernet cables or make sure that you guys a solid STATIC IP address.

Make sure that all of your buddies are connected and it says in the Server Window that you guys ARE CONNECTED!

Well excuse me, I was frustrated and not paying attention. I know perfectly how to modify a post, I'm just used to GameFAQS message boards, whereas you CAN"T edit posts. I wasn't aware of it at the time, sorry, it won't happen again.

Now, Raven: STATIC IP address? What might that be? I'm not quite familiar with all the technicallities quite yet for using roms online through Lan or anything.

And as for B, it has never made the statement "Connected" in any way. So I guess I need to figure out that STATIC IP thing, or get an ethernet cable, which probably won't happen. I'm not even sure what an ethernet cable is used for.

Are you sure you put in the correct IP address? If you're connecting via internet then chances are that you have a Dynamic IP address, which changes every time you connect (to find out your current IP address just right click on the connection icon in the task bar, select status, go to the details tab, and it's in the Client IP address field). If you connect using an Ethernet cable, your IP address should be Static (always the same).

I only put the IP address that appears when you connect. Like, when you connect, it gives you an IP address on the actual program (VBA). It always says mine is 192.168.0.100, so I give it to my friend(s).

When my friends do this as server, I get theirs, and theirs is always the same number every time we try. (not mine, but I mean theirs in particular)

Also, I don't see the connection icon in the task bar. It's simply not there. I use DSL, so where can I find it at?

Well that is not true.  The IP in there is a bogus IP.

There is no ICON in the task bar.  If you are using DSL, do you use the MODEM or another DEVICE? such as a router or a hub, switch.

Oh yeah Static IP are IP that you assign so that it will never change, If you are using DSL than you have a DHCP IP (DHCP = Dynamic Hosting Soemthing Protocol...) forgot what it really is...been so long since i took that class...DHCP IP is just an IP that a machine will assign you.  To check what IP you have type these commands.

Go to START>RUN
type cmd
Hit ENTER
than type IPCONFIG
and it will show you your IP and if it is DHCP assigned or STATIC

Do that to your Friend too...

When you find each others IP than it will work alot better... But to answer the problem I am just sure that the IP  is just the problem, knowing how you get the IP is not the solution!!!
