I really have to say i'm digusted at how overrated some people have said Goldeneye was. Goldeneye 007 was one of the most overrated games ever. It was actually a pretty terrible game, and to compare it against Halo is completely ridiculous. Some people are voting for 'which game had a bigger impact', but we're not voting for that, we're voting for 'which game is better'. Halo was made later, and had one of the best Singleplayer components ever. It also had a very versatile multiplayer component on PC (perhaps now X-Box)
Goldeneye was a terrible game for 3 main reasons: It's Singleplayer component was very uninspiring and didn't do justice to the James Bond Movies. The Gameplay was extremely boring and very crappy. The control system was one of the worst ever, not only for an FPS game, but for a N64 game.
I''m completely fuming with disgust right now, that i really don't know how to go about this, i'm not only pissed but i'm also tired so we'll just have to see how this goes. I really hated Goldeneye007's singleplayer component as it not only showcased all of Goldeneye007's gameplay and control flaws. It also showcased a terribly boring plot (compare the plot to 007 Nightfire, even though Nightfire's storyline wasn't amazing, it was a lot better than Goldeneye's), the plot was not only very cliched and unoriginal, it also was very random and didn't make any sense to the entire scheme of events during the game. Most of the characters lacked peresonality, and for most people such as myself, it eventually became a habit to skip the storyline altogether just to get to the action. The storyline just wasn't attractive enough for an avid gamer to bother with it. It couldn't even keep a 9 year old like me to keep following it, and that's where it lacked miserably, if it had have had a good storyline, it might have saved this terrible mess of a game from being one of the worst FPS's ever.
It was also very disappointing, that Goldeneye 007 didn't make better use of the Bond Trademark by using more weapons and gadgetry, and a lot more Bond Flair. Basic gameplay was almost like Doom, wading through the map shooting countless foes who seemed to respawn out of nowhere which was extremely unrealistic (unlike Doom which placed the user in a fictional hell)
The gameplay of Goldeneye failed to impress me. It was a worn concept and gave no new life to the FPS concept, and while rival companies, ID Software, Epic Games and Valve Entertainment were busy on their work that would change the way FPS games would be made forever. Rare was busy at work making a complete uninspired waste that gained most of it's success from being the first ever James Bond FPS game. The gameplay didn't add anything new, it was extremely boring, the enemies came out of unrealistic places, the physics were also unrealistic. The terrain concept were terrible, and there were many ways to take advantage of the poor AI. The gameplay was horrible, and if people said this game set the bar for what all other FPS's should be, then they're very mistaken. If that were to be true, we'd still be playing FPS' where the enemy would run at you, stop and keep shooting you, even when you've run 1 KM away from them and your hiding in a toilet ;D
The control system was absoultely horrible, i have never seen one so horrible. The camera was not only glitchy and it was hard to see what was behind you and to your side, you couldn't move the camera in order to give you a more desired view. Aiming was very difficult and the game detiriorated in the later missions as it was so hard to follow your opponent with a very slow aiming system. It's getting late so i can't continue this as much as i would have liked to. Goldeneye 007 just had what every gamer didn't want, i very fustrating and hard to control system, that wasn't very fun to play with. I'll just quickly quote lots of people who i disagreed with:

yea maybe if they made a remake because u got 2 remember that goldeneye came out on N64 not a lot of space for story and weapons
Well that's the creators fault (Rare) for not putting the game on a different system. It would have been much better on PSX or even PC. So there is no excuse for bad story and lack of weapons.

GoldenEye is the god of FPS shooters. :)
I completely disagree with that sorry. I've never heard it being called that before and i don't think i want to hear it being called that again. The god of First Person Shooters among most people is either Quake, Doom, Unreal, Halflife or even Wolfenstein 3D. These games came out round about the same time or even before Goldeneye came out.

Halo? Impact? It was just another FPS when it came out. The only thing it had going was vehicles and multiplayer via xbox live.
Golden Eye was before consoles even dreamed of being online. The multiplayer was top-notch.
If i remember right, Goldeneye wasn't online. But i guess that's not what you're saying. Yes the multiplayer was very good and very fun, but it didn't have the singleplayer to back it up as i have explained before. Halo had both the excellent singleplayer and the excellent multiplayer, and that's what made it better.

Golden eye! It is very funny ;D
Haha, i'll give you that, Goldeneye was million times more funny than Halo. Coming out onto the toilet was pretty funny, even though i've done it before in plenty of other games (System Shock for example, which was one of the best games ever, and years ahead of it's time)

Goldeneye 007 was the first to not only impact and revolutize the FPS shooting genre, but also create a standby of imitators which usually suceed due to its hyper graphics and sound and such. Goldeneye is a far superior to ALL FPS shooters AS OF NOW. But I just think Halo, overrated as it is, is just an another update to the FPS shooter.
Every FPS game pushes the genre even further, until a game comes forward and changes it all over again. That won't happen for awhile, but we are certain that Halo has pushed the genre farther than most games have.
So I'm not gonna vote for either. I'm just gonna vote for Alien vs Predator ;D
It wasn't the first to impact and revolutionise the FPS shooting genre. There were many games before it that have had great impact on their own merit and not just on the Bond Trademark. Such games are Wolfenstein 3D, which basically CREATED the FPS genre. Doom, which took it even furthur and was amazing fun when it was released. Quake, which was one of a kind and about 10 times better than Goldeneye easily. Unreal, whose only rival was really Quake, not Goldeneye, even though they were all released around a similar time (Quake II was released about 1 month after Goldeneye was, and still one of the best FPS games ever). Later on Halflife had the greatest impact of all on the genre, and is still played all over the world today in the incarnation of Counter-Strike (do note that Halflife was released in 1998, Goldeneye was released in 1997)
I don't recall any 'imitations' of Goldeneye, as the gameplay and control system of it was ridiculous for any game developer to actually use. Take a look at a game such as Quake or Unreal, where game developers took their engine and made them into some of the most sucessful games of all time (Valve's Halflife used the Unreal Engine). And btw, Goldeneye's GFX were terrible for a N64 Game, Rare had much better looking games such as the Banjo Kazooie Series, and Diddy Kong Racing. The sound was pretty decent though, but there were other games on the N64 with better sound.
To say that it's 'far superior to all other shooters' it just hilarious. There are about 500 FPS games i could name that are better, and some of them sucked. I think you need to actually go out and buy some more FPS games, because with the amount of knowledge you have of FPS games, you can't really speak for how good they are. I'm officially classifying this topic as a n00b topic, AS OF NOW. (j/k)
But yeah i loved Alien Vs Predator, excellent game.
~And that's all i have to say, i won't talk about Halo as i think it was a very good game, perhaps overrated, but still a legend for many years to come i'd think. Good topic this turned out to be :D
Well it's really late and i have to go to bed now night ;D
