Superb story. Good graphics. Outstanding music (to understand what I mean, look at any sqare-enix rpg).  Good battle system and good gameplay.

A interesting story line. From my experience, Japanese games have much better storylines than American games. The music they find are usually very suitable for the games they create.

Storyline, gameplay, characters. I don't mind the graphics and music. As long graphics and music aren't bad I like it.

music can make or break a game. With out good music a game is boring and if the music is realy bad, it can be very painful.

I don't like Japanese RPGs very much because they are in Japanese and I cannot read it. I do like Japanese RPGs that have been released in the US with a translation...
Recently, American and British companies have been making the best RPGs. See Star Wars:KOTOR and Fable.

I don't really consider Fable an RPG becuase it is too open ended.
